from day 1

Steven was born at French Hospital, now known as Pacific Alliance Medical Center, on the corner of College and Hill Streets in the heart of Chinatown.

EDUCATION

Steven’s mother took classes at Evans Community Adult School on Figueroa Street, where Steven often sat quietly in the back of the class because there was no one to watch him.

JOBS

Steven’s father’s first stable job was as a waiter at a restaurant in the 34th District that allowed him to provide for his family.

FACTORY WORK

Steven’s mother worked in the Garment District in Downtown, sewing clothes for pennies a piece to help make ends meet.

SMALL BUSINESS

The Far East Plaza in Chinatown is where Steven’s dad ran a struggling restaurant during the depths of the recession in the early 1990s. It’s now home to Chego, Howlin’ Ray's, and Ramen Champ.

PARKS

Elysian and Alpine Parks are the first parks that Steven knew, places where he developed his love for sports and the environment.

HOME OWNERSHIP

El Sereno is where Steven’s family experienced the ups and downs of the American dream. In the district, they were able to purchase their first home, which they later lost during a rough patch.

Dodgers and Lakers

A huge fan of LA baseball and basketball, Steven grew up listening to the voices of Vin Scully and Chick Hearn.
